Pilotta Card Values & Point Breakdown

In Cypriot Pilotta, each deal contains exactly 162 total points. Card rankings and values change dramatically between the trump suit and the three side (non-trump) suits:

Card In Trumps In Non-Trumps (Side Suits) Notes
Jack (J) 20 2 Highest trump in the game
Nine (9) 14 0 Second highest trump (manella)
Ace (A) 11 11 Highest card in side suits
Ten (10) 10 10 Beats Kings and Queens in all suits
King (K) 4 4 Forms the pilotta (20 pts) with the Queen of trumps
Queen (Q) 3 3 Forms the pilotta (20 pts) with the King of trumps
Eight / Seven (8 / 7) 0 0 No point value
Total per suit 62 points 30 points (× 3 = 90) 62 + 90 + 10 (Last trick) = 162

Partner Signals & Key Tactical Rules

1. Ace Leads in Side Suits

When defending or establishing side-suit control, leading an outside Ace captures 11 critical points and signals to your partner that you hold control of that suit.

2. Discard Signals (Calling vs Refusing)

When you are void in the suit led and do not trump, your discard serves as an explicit message to your partner:

3. Trump Drawing

Once you win the contract, the declarer's primary objective is typically to lead trumps early to clear the defenders' trumps, allowing outside Aces and Tens to cash safely.

4. Mandatory Under-Trumping

In Cypriot Pilotta, if a trump has already been played in a trick, you are obligated to play a higher trump if you hold one. If you only hold lower trumps, you are still forced to play a lower trump. This mandatory under-trumping is a defining rule of Pilotta.

5. The Rule of 6 (Scorebook Rounding)

Raw points are divided by 10 for the scorebook: endings of 1–5 round down, while 7–9 round up. If both teams finish on a raw score ending in 6 (e.g. 126 vs 36), the Rule of 6 dictates that the contracting team rounds UP (126 → 13), while the defending team rounds DOWN (36 → 3).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the total number of card points in a round of Pilotta?
Every deal of Cypriot Pilotta contains exactly 162 points: 62 points in trumps, 90 points in the three side suits (3 × 30), and 10 points for the final trick.
How are points scored when a team goes down?
The bidding team counts its trick points together with its declarations. If that total falls short of the bid, it scores 0. The defending team takes all 162 trick points plus the bid plus all declarations from both teams.
How does the Rule of 6 work?
Scores are divided by 10 for the scorebook: endings 1–5 round down, 7–9 round up. When a score ends in exactly 6 (e.g. 126 vs 36), the bidding team rounds up (13) and the defenders round down (3).
How is Capot scored?
Winning all 8 tricks in a hand scores Capot, which replaces the 162: the winning team receives its contract plus 25 scorebook points (250 raw points) plus its declarations. The opponents keep only their own.
What happens on Contre (Double)?
On a Contre (x2), the winning team takes twice the contract value plus 162 plus every declaration from both teams; the losing team scores 0 — neither its tricks nor its own pilotta. On a Surcontre (x4) the contract is quadrupled.
Which declaration counts when both teams declare?
Only the team holding the single highest declaration scores — and it scores all of its declarations. The other team scores 0, however many it holds. If the highest declarations are equal and neither is in trumps, both are void. The pilotta always scores and is never cancelled by an opposing declaration.
What discard signals are used when playing with a partner?
When you cannot follow suit and do not trump, your discard signals your partner: a low card (7, 8, 9 in the side suits) asks them to lead that suit; a high card (Queen or King) says you have no interest in it.
